Surya Namaskara – The Sun Salutation

Surya Namaskara or the Sun Salutation has a great energizing effect on the body, prana and mind. In Sanskrit, ‘Surya’ means the sun and ‘Namaskara’ means the salutation. Surya Namaskara consists of a series of yoga postures. There are 12 yoga poses performed in sequence. Surya Namskara is usually done in the morning during sunrise, facing the rising sun.

Utthita Parsvakonasana – Extended Side Angle Pose

Utthita Parsvakonasana or extended side angle pose strengthens the thighs, hips, knees and ankle. In Sanskrit, Utthita means extended, Parsva means side, Kona means angle and Asana means a pose. Utthita Parsvakonasana builds stamina and endurance.

Dolphin Plank Pose

Dolphin Plank Pose is a yoga asana for increasing core strength and developing balance. The muscles of the arms, shoulders, abdomen and legs are all strengthened. The Dolphin Plank Pose is a combination of the plain Dolphin Pose and the Plank pose.

Kumbhakasana – The Plank Pose

Kumbhakasana or the Plank Pose develops strength of core muscles of the shoulders, arms, trunk and legs. In Sanskrit, Kumbhaka means the holding of breath and Asana means a pose. In the final pose, the breath (or Kumbhaka) is held to maintain the posture.

Pincha Mayurasana – Feathered Peacock Pose

Pincha Mayurasana or the feathered peacock pose is nothing but the inverted forearm-stand. In Sanskrit, Pincha means feather, Mayur means peacock and Asana means a Pose. Pincha Mayurasana strengthens arms and shoulders and require a good sense of balance.

Agnistambhasana – Fire Log Pose

Agnistambhasana or the Fire Log Pose is a good hip opener. In Sanskrit, Agni means fire, Stambha means statue and Asana means a Pose. Agnistambhasana is an easy pose and can be used to improve the flexibility of the hips and groin muscles.

Parivritta Parsvakonasana – Revolved Side Angle Pose

Parivritta Parsvakonasana or the Revolved Side Angle Pose strengthens the shoulders, arms and legs. In Sanskrit, Parivritta means to turn around, Parsva means side and asana means a pose. Parivritta Parsvakonasana is a side angle twist pose and comes with many variations.

Chaturanga Dandasana – The Four Limbed Staff Pose

Chaturanga Dandasana or Four Limbed Staff Pose is a basic pose to bring balance and strength to arms and legs. In sanskrit, Chatur means four and Anga means part (of the body). Danda means the staff and asana means the pose. It is also known as the Low Plank Pose.

Utkatasana – The Chair Pose

Utkatasana or the Chair Pose comes from the Sanskrit words Utkata meaning fierce or intense and asana meaning a pose. Utkatasana is a yogic pose which resembles sitting on a chair (without a chair, of course), and hence popularly called the Chair Pose.

Virabhadrasana – The Warrior Pose

Virabhadrasana or the warrior pose is a series of yoga poses each having its distinctive benefit. In Sanskrit, Vira means brave, Bhadra means friend and Asana means a Pose. Virabhadrasana is named after the legendary warrior Virabhadra in Puranas. In the Puranic lore, it is said that Virabhadra was created by Lord Shiva from his hair, to destroy the arrogance of Daksha who refused to invite his daughter Sati while conducting a Yagna.
