The Patanjali Yoga Sutras define Asana as – ‘Sthiram Sukham Asanam’, which means Asana is a pose that is steady and comfortable. Asana is the third step in Maharishi Patanjali’s Ashtanga yoga. Asanas or yogic poses are aimed towards attaining strength, flexibility, balance and steadiness. Apart from the spiritual benefits, each Yoga pose also has its specific health benefits.
Surya Namaskara mantras are chanted audibly or mentally while performing the Sun Salutation. Surya Namaskara or the Sun Salutation is a series of 12 poses performed in sequential order. Surya Namaskara is a complete yogic package for the body, breath, mind and the spirit.
Surya Namaskara or the Sun Salutation has a great energizing effect on the body, prana and mind. In Sanskrit, ‘Surya’ means the sun and ‘Namaskara’ means the salutation. Surya Namaskara consists of a series of yoga postures. There are 12 yoga poses performed in sequence. Surya Namskara is usually done in the morning during sunrise, facing the rising sun.
